NANAIMO - More than 300 Nanaimo children took over streets and sidewalks Wednesday to help their counterparts throughout Canada set a world record.

Students from Rock City elementary joined schools across the country for the 2007 World Record Walk, trying to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of people walking one kilometre at the same time.

Rock City teacher Tanya Lebans said the event was not only to break records, but also to raise awareness about staying active. She said the event was a fun way to encourage kids and their parents to walk short distances like to and from school, instead of driving.
